This section contains the glossary for Enghouse Vidyo products.

A

Administrator

The person who configures, maintains, and manages the operation of the infrastructure component, such as the VidyoPortal or VidyoGateway. Administrators can control system-wide parameters and policies, establish end-user and association privileges, customize user conferencing capabilities, and more. See also Super admin and Tenant admin.

AES

Advanced Encryption Standard. AES is a symmetric block cipher chosen by the U.S. government to protect classified information. It can be implemented in both software and hardware to encrypt sensitive data. It is essential for government computer security, cybersecurity, and electronic data protection.

AGC

Automatic Gain Control. In a video call, AGC automatically controls the gain of a signal by reducing the volume if the signal is strong and raising it when the signal is weaker, thereby keeping the audio output at a near constant level.

AVC

Advanced Video Coding. AVC is also known as MPEG-4 Part 10 or H.264. It is a video compression standard based on block-oriented, motion-compensated coding. It is the most commonly used format for the recording, compression, and distribution of video content, See also H.264/AVC .

B

Bandwidth

The maximum rate of data transfer across a given path, such as a network.

Breakout rooms

A feature that enables the call moderator to separate the call participants into smaller groups. This feature is useful in situations where there are privacy concerns but call participants still need to speak openly. The audio and visual streams of each breakout room are hidden from the other breakout rooms, regular rooms, and main conference room.

Note: The moderator can broadcast messages to all of the breakout rooms, as well as receive requests for help from participants in the breakout rooms, but this doesn’t affect the privacy of each breakout room.

C

CAL (Epic)

Context-aware linkingCAL maintains the click-to-connect Vidyo experience from within Epic workflows, but it also gives Epic users a robust set of features and capabilities including multiparty meetings, far-end camera control, H.323/SIP dialing capability, and support for an array of healthcare peripherals.

CIF

Common Intermediate Format. A video format used in videoconferencing systems that supports both NTSC and PAL signals. CIF is part of the ITU H.261 videoconferencing standard. It specifies a data rate of 30 frames per second (fps), with each frame containing 288 lines and 352 pixels per line.

Cluster

A group of VidyoGateways used for increased capacity. One VidyoGateway is designated the Controller. In addition to handling calls itself, the Controller also controls several Standby VidyoGateways.

Codec

Short for coder/decoder or, because codecs are commonly used for compression, compressor/decompressor; a codec is any technology for compressing and decompressing data. Some popular codecs for computer video include MPEG, Indeo, and Cinepak.

Controller (VidyoGateway)

A VidyoGateway that, in addition to handling calls, allocates capacity for several standby VidyoGateways.

D

DES

Data Encryption Standard. DES is a symmetric-key algorithm for the encryption of digital data. Although its short key length of 56 bits makes it too insecure for modern applications, it has been highly influential in the advancement of cryptography.

DiffServ

Differentiated services (DiffServ) is a computer networking architecture that specifies a simple and scalable mechanism for classifying and managing network traffic and providing quality of service (QoS) on IP networks.

DSCP

Differentiated Service Code Point. DSCP is a means of classifying and managing network traffic and of providing quality of service (QoS) in Layer 3 IP networks. It uses the 6-bit Differentiated Services (DS) field in the IP header for the purpose of packet classification. Differentiated services (DiffServ) is a computer networking architecture that specifies a simple and scalable mechanism for classifying and managing network traffic and providing QoS on IP networks.

E

Endpoint

A device, such as a desktop, laptop, Android phone or tablet, iOS phone or tablet, VidyoConnect Room, or VidyoRoom that enables a user to participate in direct video calls and video conferences.

Note: Even though people can participate in conferences in audio-only mode (if your system has a VidyoGateway) by using cell phones and landlines, they’re not considered endpoints.

F

FECC

Far End Camera Control. FECC allows another meeting participant to take control of your camera and use the pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) functionality of the camera. The webcam must have the PTZ features for this feature to work.

FIPS

Federal Information Processing Standard. FIPS is a program overseen by NIST and the Department of Commerce that requires specific security standards for data and encryption.

Firewall

A network security device that monitors and filters incoming and outgoing network traffic based on an organization's previously established security policies. A firewall establishes a barrier between a private, trusted internal network and an untrusted network, such as the public Internet.

FQDN

Fully Qualified Domain Name. This is the complete address of an internet host or computer. It provides its exact location within the domain name system (DNS) by specifying the hostname, domain name, and top-level domain (TLD). For example, for the domain name www.whatis.com, "www" is the hostname, "whatis" is the domain name, and ".com" is the top-level domain.

G

Gatekeeper

A management tool for H.323 multimedia networks. Depending on the demands of the specific network, the gatekeeper oversees authentication, authorization, telephone directory, and PBX (private branch exchange) services, as well as call control and routing.

Groups

Users, public meeting rooms, and VidyoConnect Rooms/VidyoRooms belong to provisioning groups. There is always at least one group, called the default group. Such groups are managed by Super and Tenant admins. Groups are subsets of Tenants. You don’t have to create any groups. However, doing so allows you to allocate resources among tenants in a way that may better suit your organization’s requirements.

Guest

Users you invite to a meeting who are not registered with the system. Guest users only have the ability to join a call. They don’t have the ability to log in to VidyoConnect on their own or receive incoming calls.

H

H.235

The protocol that covers security and encryption for H.323 and other H.245 based terminals.

H.239

The standard used in H.323 and H.320 video conferencing that enables two simultaneous media channels in a single video conference. The second channel is used for data presentation. For example, it’s possible to see a speaking person within a main video screen and see their computer screen with diagrams, documents, screenshots, and so on.

H.245

A control signaling protocol for the exchange of end-to-end messages between communicating H.323 and H.234 endpoints/terminals.

H.264/AVC

A simple and straightforward video codec that provides enhanced compression performance and a network-friendly video representation. Also known as Advanced Video Coding (AVC).

H.264/SVC

A video compression standard that enables a video stream to be broken into multiple resolutions, quality levels, and bit rates. Also known as Scalable Video Coding (SVC).

H.323

A recommendation from the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector that defines the protocols to provide audio-visual communication sessions on any packet network, such as LANs and the Internet. It also sets interoperability guidelines for communication between H.323-enabled networks and the H.32X-based family of conferencing standards.

HD (High Definition) video

Video of higher resolution and quality than standard-definition. While there is no standardized meaning for high-definition, most HD video formats provide either 720 or 1080 vertical scan lines.

I

Infrastructure

The components that provide the foundation or framework of the video conferencing solution. Vidyo infrastructure components include the VidyoPortal, VidyoRouter, VidyoGateway, and VidyoReplay.

IP address

Internet Protocol address. This is a numerical label, such as 192.0.2.1, that is connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. An IP address serves two main functions: network interface identification and location addressing.

Inter-Portal Communications (IPC)

The IPC option, which is also known as Vidyo Address Dialing, enables users to join conferences that are taking place in rooms on a third-party VidyoPortal. IPC access control can be set at the tenant level or at the system level.

J

JSON

JavaScript Object Notation. JSON is a standard text-based format for representing structured data based on JavaScript object syntax. It is commonly used for transmitting data in web applications (e.g., sending some data from the server to the client, so it can be displayed on a web page, or vice versa).

L

Legacy

A device, such as an ordinary telephone, or a video conferencing system that uses traditional H.323 or SIP-based protocols. The more descriptive term H.323/SIP is preferable; however, in some cases, the term legacy is still used.

M

MCU

Multipoint Control Unit. A device in videoconferencing that connects two or more audiovisual terminals together into one single videoconference call. The MCU collects information about the capabilities of the systems at each of the videoconference endpoints and sets the conference to the lowest common denominator so that everyone can participate.

Meeting

An audio and video connection of a meeting room with two or more users interacting and sharing their media streams, and optionally the windows of applications running on their machines.

Meeting rooms

Meeting rooms are virtual rooms where users of the Vidyo system can gather for video conferences. There are two types of meeting rooms:

  • Personal – Each user is automatically assigned their own personal room. This is the equivalent of a “personal office” in the physical world.
  • Public – Common public spaces that can be created by administrators. These are the equivalent of conference rooms in the physical world.

Moderator

The VidyoConnect participant (typically the room owner) who has more capabilities than the other VidyoConnect conference participants. For example, the moderator can mute the microphones or cameras of the other call participants. The moderator is labeled Moderator under their name in the VidyoConnect UI participants list. The moderator can also create or modify a moderator PIN, enabling other participants to become the moderator by entering the PIN during the call.

Moderator PIN

A Personal Identification Number (PIN) that is configured by the room owner. Call participants can enter the PIN to claim moderator privileges.

Multi-tenant

A single VidyoPortal system can be set up by the Super Admin to host multiple organizations known as tenants. Each Vidyo system has at least one tenant, called the default tenant. If you choose not to use the system’s built-in multi-tenant capability, every user in your entire organization belongs to the default tenant. Otherwise, users must be assigned to specific tenants, and each tenant has its own specific configuration and settings.

N

NAT

Network Address Translation. An Internet standard that enables a local area network (LAN) to use one set of IP addresses for internal traffic and a second set of addresses for external traffic. A NAT box located where the LAN meets the Internet and makes all necessary IP address translations.

O

OCSP

Online Certificate Status Protocol. The OCSP is an Internet protocol used to check whether a digital certificate is valid or if it has been revoked.

OID

Object identifiers. OIDs are unambiguous long-form names for any object or concept, allowing anyone to recognize what item their communications are referring to, without confusion or errors.

P

Participants

Users who join and participate in meetings with the VidyoConnect desktop, mobile, or WebRTC app or with VidyoConnect Room or VidyoRoom.

Point-to-point call

A video conference that takes place between just two users. No additional participants can join a point-to-point call. Also known as a direct call.

Portal

See VidyoPortal .

PTZ

Pan-Tilt-Zoom. “Pan" refers to the horizontal movement of the lens, "tilt" refers to the vertical movement of the lens, and "zoom" refers to the adjustment of the focal length of the lens.

A PTZ camera is a camera that supports remote control of direction (panning and tilting) and zooming (increasing and decreasing).

Prefix (VidyoGateway)

A unique identifier for a call service.

Q

QoS

Quality of Service. QoS refers to the capability of a network to offer a service with a certain quality. The quality of a service is a measure of performance which can be defined by a number of different parameters including service response time, loss, signal-to-noise ratio, crosstalk, echo, interrupts, frequency response, loudness levels, etc.

R

RADIUS

Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service. RADIUS is a client/server protocol that runs in the application layer and manages user access to a network by providing centralized authentication, authorization, and accounting services.

Room

Virtual spaces (like virtual conference rooms) where users meet for their video conferences. When a user’s account is set up, that user is automatically assigned a room. A user can have more than one room (all accessible via his or her portal).

Router pools

An enhanced topology that increases network bandwidth efficiency, decreases latency, and optimizes how VidyoRouters handle traffic. Because many of our customers don’t require the advantages that Router Pools provides, the feature is turned off by default. A small organization with few locations may not need to use of the capabilities of Router Pools right away but it’s built-in, doesn’t cost extra, and it’s ready to go when you need it.

RTMP

Real Time Messaging Protocol. A communication protocol for streaming audio, video, and data over the Internet.

S

Screen share

When using one of the endpoints, such as VidyoConnect for Desktop, Mobile, or WebRTC, screen sharing is the ability to send what is displayed on your screen to the other participants in the conference so they can view your local screen. You can share from any desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone device.

SD (Standard Definition)

A video format with a 640 x 360 resolution and a 16 to 9 aspect ratio.

SIP

Session Initiation Protocol. This is a signaling protocol that enables the Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) by defining the messages sent between endpoints and managing the actual elements of a call.

SNMP

Simple Network Management Protocol. SNMP is an application-layer protocol for monitoring and managing network devices on a local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN). The purpose of SNMP is to provide network devices, such as routers, serversn and printers, with a common language for sharing information with a network management system (NMS).

Standby VidyoGateway

One of a cluster of VidyoGateways that are controlled by a single Controller VidyoGateway.

Super admin

The user who has administrative privileges and is responsible for general portal configuration including network settings, components configuration, maintenance (backup and upgrades), tenant configuration, and global settings. In a multi-tenant system, the Super admin has full administrative privileges above the Tenant admin and all regular Tenant admin rights. See also Tenant admin.

SVC

Also known as H.264. A video compression standard that enables a video stream to be broken into multiple resolutions, quality levels, and bit rates.

System console administrator

The user with this account configures and maintains the system and the network using the System Console and the configuration pages for VidyoRouter and VidyoGateway.

T

TCS4 

Terminal Control String. A special routing method for incoming H.320 video calls. TCS4 allows direct inward dialing (DID) to an endpoint on the IP network through the gateway when DID is not available. H.323 endpoints on the IP network register with the gatekeeper using extension numbers. When an ISDN terminal dials one of the gateway phone numbers followed by a TCS4 extension, the call is routed directly to the corresponding IP endpoint registered with that extension.

Tenant 

A single VidyoPortal system can be set up to host multiple organizations known as tenants. Each Vidyo system has at least one tenant, called the default tenant. If you choose not to use the system’s built-in multi-tenant capability, every user in your entire organization belongs to the default tenant.

Tenant admin

The person who configures and maintains the user settings for their own tenant or tenants in the video conferencing system. The Tenant admin has administrative privileges and can add, delete and manage users, set up public rooms, and set up groups (which define the maximum number of participants and bandwidth for users). All tasks that can be performed by a Tenant admin can also be performed by a Super admin; however, many Super admin tasks cannot be performed by Tenant admins. See also Super admin.

Tenant name

A simple identifier within the system and among other tenants. If you’re hosting multiple organizations, it might be the organization’s common name (Acme Corp., Jones Foundation, and so on). If you’ve divided your own organization into different tenants the name might reflect the tenant’s role in your organization (Board Members, Sales, New York Office, and so on).

Tenant URL

The tenant’s URL is the URL or fully qualified domain name (FQDN) that tenants use to access their user portals.

U

URL

Uniform Resource Locator. This is a unique identifier used to locate a resource on the Internet. It is also referred to as a web address.

V

VidyoConnect

The software client that enables users to view other users in point-to-point calls and video conferences. It’s easy to use and manage via the VidyoPortal, and it can send and receive in HD. All users are assigned a password-protected personal space, thus making it possible for meetings to be held anytime–whether impromptu or by prior arrangement. It supports standard USB webcams and runs on Macs, PCs, and mobile phones, providing an unparalleled personalized multipoint collaborative experience.

VidyoConnect for Desktop

The Windows and macOS desktop application for VidyoConnect. See also VidyoConnect.

VidyoConnect for Mobile

The Android and iOS mobile application for VidyoConnect. See also VidyoConnect.

VidyoConnect for WebRTC

The download-free, in-browser web application for VidyoConnect. See also VidyoConnect.

VidyoConnect Room, VidyoConnect Room SE, and VidyoRoom

VidyoConnect Room and VidyoRoom are ideal systems for team collaboration with options for smaller huddle rooms to large conference rooms. They deliver incredible 4K Ultra HD video resolution without sacrificing quality from remote participants or their content. Flexible conference control options make it simple to manage, using either the VidyoPortal or a remote-control device. They interoperate seamlessly with VidyoConnect clients, making it possible for people to join a conference from their home office or wherever they happen to be.

VidyoRoom SE is an installable software group video system that delivers industry-leading Ultra HD experiences on off-the-shelf computing hardware.

VidyoGateway

The VidyoGateway allows the Vidyo conferencing infrastructure to connect to traditional H.323 and SIP devices. It supports standards, such as H.239 for data collaboration, that are required for those devices to communicate, regardless of whether they are endpoints, MCUs, gatekeepers, or gateways. For example, the VidyoGateway can be integrated with SIP PBX. It seamlessly integrates into the network providing the end user with an easy experience regardless of whether they’re calling a Vidyo device or traditional H.323/SIP device.

VidyoHealth

The Epic Context-Aware Linking (CAL) integration with Vidyo that enables healthcare providers to access VidyoConnect meetings from within their Epic EHR (Electronic Health Record) system.

VidyoInsights

A performance monitoring system and analytics tool for on-premises and private cloud customers to verify and track VidyoPlatform infrastructure components (VidyoPortal and VidyoRouter), applications, and events.

VidyoPlatform

VidyoPlatform works across multiple platforms by providing developers with all the necessary infrastructure and support to quickly embed high-quality, reliable, and scalable multiparty video collaboration into any WebRTC, mobile or native application, with just a few lines of code.

The VidyoPlatform includes the VidyoClient SDK, which provides the APIs for integrating such communication capabilities into a variety of applications and workflows. It also includes the VidyoPlatform Server API for call control and moderation.

VidyoPortal

The VidyoPortal provides central management of the Vidyo devices on the network. It’s an easy-to-use secure web portal that allows for integration with secure LDAP and Active Directory databases for user authentication, as well as maintaining its own user database. The VidyoPortal allows administrators from any location on the network to control every aspect of the Vidyo conferencing solution from a central location. Administrators can control system-wide parameters and policies, establish end-user and association privileges, and customize user conferencing capabilities.

The VidyoPortal also acts as a web front for all users of the system. Its flexible user interface facilitates everything required to initiate and manage a call. Users have control over adding, disconnecting, and muting/un-muting participants along with many other conference control parameters. The interface allows users to manage and customize their own contact lists and to initiate reservation-less multipoint conferences, as well as point-to-point calls.

VidyoPortal Hot Standby Redundancy

This option requires two VidyoPortal servers to be deployed in the same subnet. One of the VidyoPortals acts as the Active VidyoPortal and the other as the Standby VidyoPortal. If the Active VidyoPortal is not reachable, the Standby VidyoPortal automatically takes over within one minute. Upon taking over, the Standby VidyoPortal uses the information it received in the last synchronization with the Active VidyoPortal.

VidyoProxy

A software component built into the VidyoRouter that enables authorized endpoints to connect while denying unauthorized connections. It also enables NAT and firewall traversal.

VidyoReplay

An optional rack-mountable appliance that enables users to stream live or prerecorded video. For instance, a webinar can be broadcast live to participants and also saved to be played back on demand by those who missed the original conference or want to view it again.

VidyoRoom

See VidyoConnect Room, VidyoConnect Room SE, and VidyoRoom.

VidyoRouter

The core infrastructure product for conducting all videoconferencing. It is an intelligent routing appliance that uses scalable video packet switching technology to achieve unprecedented performance and features without the need for expensive, time-consuming transcoding. All video traffic is managed by the VidyoRouter. Additionally, conferences can span across multiple VidyoRouters, achieving maximized WAN utilization, as well as redundancy and efficiency.

W

Webinar

A feature of the VidyoConnect app that enables you to create online meetings where you can select user roles for invited participants. Webinars are ideal for larger meetings, meetings that are open to the public, and/or meetings where participants don’t need to interact.
